On the afternoon of September 16, 2024, the final round of the Eastern Region of the Fifth Chinese Business School's “Speaking Moment” Challenge (referred to as the “Chinese Speaking Competition”) was successfully held at the School of Business of Soochow University.

Liu Zhiming, Secretary of the Party Committee of Business School of Soochow University, delivered a speech, on behalf of the organizers, to express the warmest welcome to the delegations of major universities who came from afar, and to extend sincere thanks to the friends from all circles who have cared for and supported the development of the College for a long time.

In her speech, Ms. Su Chang, Executive Chairperson of the “Book Talking Moment” Challenge, thanked the Business School of Soochow University for its great support in hosting the event, and briefly introduced the founding intention and development history of the Challenge. The theme of this year's competition is “The Beauty of Reading”, aiming to present the excellent Chinese and Western cultures in books through innovative stage interpretation, so as to collide and exchange, and to make friends through books.

A total of seven teams competed in the final of the East Region of this year's Huashuo Competition. Centering on the theme of the competition, “The Beauty of Reading”, they brought us an audio-visual feast through abstract reading and deep understanding of books, and through a variety of stage art creativity, to experience the beauty of work, life, culture, science and technology.

From Wuhan University's Luo Jia Shu Xiang team, the entry book is “Leek Survival Guide - An Introduction to Minimalist Critical Thinking”. In the age of the Internet, there is an explosion of information, a surge of opinions, and a variety of routines. Everyone may get lost in it, and may also be brought into the rhythm because of their own needs and desires, be taken away from money and time, and become harvested leeks. Through three scenarios of life trivia between husband and wife, the workplace leader's fancy big cake, and the various ways of propaganda in the live bandwagon, the Luo Jia Shu Xiang team lets us know how to be earthly sober, not to be brought into rhythm, and not to be wrapped up in emotions and interests in the raging stream of opinions.

The Su General Storytelling Team from Soochow University entered the book “The Light of Civilization in the Crescent”. Architecture is a landmark and an inscription of civilization. When splendor and glory, decay and destruction have all become history, we can still read the rich legacy of civilization through the establishment and form of architecture. The elaborate stage production by the storytelling team, as if the Wumayyad Mosque in Damascus, Syria, is right in front of our eyes, with its magnificent structure and splendid gilt mosaic decoration witnessing the glory of Syria's history, and mapping out the country's long history and religious and cultural mingling.

The team from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE) entered the book “The Philosophy of Eating”. In the contemporary context, eating is no longer just about metabolism and survival in the physiological sense, but also a way for us to entangle and coexist with all things in the world. The work of the team is based on the real life of ordinary people, picking up some fragments of “eating” from daily life, triggering people's empathy and pondering their own understanding of life.

Team Shangshufang from Shanghai University, the entry book is “AI Future in Progress”. In today's ever-changing technology, AI is no longer a far-fetched sci-fi concept, but has gradually infiltrated every corner of our lives. However, when AI really dominates the future world, where will human society go? With the construction industry as the backdrop, the Upper Study Room team leads us through the fog of science fiction on a stage full of futuristic technology to gain a deeper understanding of the scientific principles, application scenarios, and possible social impacts of each technology.

The Weaving Dreams Hua Speaks team from Donghua University entered the book “Ways of Reading”. Their wonderful work tells us that knowledge in different fields can be melded. In this society where the division of labor is highly refined, only those who love to read know that the masters in all walks of life are scouting for themselves in separate ways.

The Silk Road Camelot team from Lanzhou University entered the book “Between Loneliness: An Alternative Art History”. People are not born to be lonely, but after getting deeper and deeper into a field, they find that they can't communicate with the majority of people, and then they get used to loneliness, enjoy loneliness, and gradually they don't feel lonely anymore, and then they are no longer separate from loneliness. The Silk Road Camelot team, through dialogues with Raphael in the Renaissance, Delacroix in the Romantic period, Monet, the representative of Impressionism, and the representative of modern artists, allows us to enter into the depths of their souls, and to feel the solitude and eternity of art.

The team from Shandong University, Shanshan and Chuan, entered the book “The Effective Manager”. Effective managers don't start their work at the beginning, they often start from the time schedule, and don't start with a plan, but recognize what they spend their time on as the starting point. Shan Shan and Chuan team with the help of “Journey to the West”, a classic literary work, let us from another perspective to analyze the journey to fetch the scriptures if you do not do a good job of time management, the long road is long, 991 difficulties do not know when to be successful.

After the wonderful interpretation of the participating teams, the expert judges at the scene made professional comments and guidance from various perspectives, such as performance form, interpretation skills, depth of interpretation of works, etc., which not only affirmed the perfect presentation of the content of the books selected by the participants, but also put forward some suggestions on the inadequacy of scripted lines, body language, and other forms of artistic expression, and expressed the higher expectations of the expert judges for the participants to transform the beauty of reading into an aesthetic work through stage interpretation, infecting more people around us with the love of reading, and letting reading open the doors to countless new worlds.
