On January 4, an event with the theme of “Language and Community: Sharing Practical Experiences of English Corner Organization” was successfully held under the careful planning of the Secretariat of MBA Federation of Soochow University.

The event was hosted by Li Shuangshuang, Secretary General of the MBA Federation, and the guest speaker Sarah, who was born and raised in Suzhou, has a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Melbourne and a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Wisconsin, and a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Wisconsin. Sarah was born and raised in Suzhou, holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Melbourne and a Master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and is currently a full-time recruitment consultant and part-time English educator.

Sarah explained to the MBA students the interesting points of the English Corner in an interactive way. English Corner originated in Shenyang, China in the 1980s, and the English Corner organized by Sarah is now flourishing in many areas of Suzhou such as Ligongdi, Suzhou Bay, Xiangcheng, Yinshan Lake, New District and Kunshan.

Sarah detailed the challenges faced by the English Corner during its infancy, such as difficulties in choosing a location and attracting participants. However, by employing a series of innovative strategies, such as weekly poster campaigns, podcast promotions, structured meetings, and the use of social media platforms for publicity, the English Corner successfully overcame these difficulties. Currently, the fixed collaborative venue, unique posters, the Xiaohongshu account with a large number of fans, and the active WeChat community have become a solid foundation for the English Corner to continue to grow.

The English Corner has had a profound impact on its participants, many of whom have improved their language skills, increased their self-confidence, and honed their communication and leadership skills as a result. In addition, the English Corner has achieved remarkable success in community and cultural exchange, with more than six venues now attracting more than 300 participants each week. It not only brings together friends from countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Malaysia and Cape Town, but also fosters deeper cultural exchanges and provides participants with employment and business opportunities.

Looking ahead, the Suzhou English Corner has an ambitious development blueprint that includes expanding to more venues, diversifying hours, and conducting a variety of activities to meet the needs of different interests. They are also exploring new partnerships to expand the English Corner's reach, and Sarah has developed the concepts of a Youth English Corner and a Business English Corner, which are designed to appeal to young learners and working professionals. Her vision for the future emphasizes sustainability and innovation, expecting English Corner to serve as a platform for continuous progress, empowering individuals and communities with new vitality through language and cultural exchange.

To summarize, English Corner, as an interest-driven community for the public good, plays a crucial role in improving language proficiency, promoting cultural exchange, enhancing interpersonal communication, and facilitating professional development. It is with strong and selfless organizers like Sarah that English Corner continues to grow and inspire more people to engage in cross-cultural learning and exchange.

During this sharing, MBA students interacted actively with Sarah, and were inspired not only by the methods of English learning, but also by the difficulties of community organization and suggestions for community development.
